 Southpaw Video Productions
Cheezy Videos, Cheaply Done
By Mark "PunkTiger!" Correia

On this page are my (lame and rather horrid) attempts of making small puppetry videos done to (in the broadest general sense of the term) popular songs. Most of which have been seen on the Funday Pawpet Show (much to their dismay). All these videos were done solely by me. I chose the music, controlled the puppets, did the videography, mixed and edited the videos and unleashed them on an unsuspecting world.

I have upgraded my video making equipment to a higher standard! My video computer is now a Shuttle SB51G with a 1.8 GHz Pentium 4, and the video camera is now a Sony DVP-250 Digital 8mm with USB and Firewire connections! As for software, I've upgraded to "Vegas Video 4.0". The puppeting "stage" is a merely blanket thrown over the head of my bed. Of course, since I only have the (sur)RealMedia files on this site, you'd never know of the upgrades. The videos still come out poor. :-P

Because Southpaw Video Productions is a one-man show, the videos will tend to be rather simplistic with no room for a "Cast of Thousands" (or even three). These videos are learning experiences for me. Something to do in my spare time. I have no such visions of being either a world-class puppeteer or an award-winning video producer. If you want to see eye-popping, jaw-dropping amateur puppetry videos with so-much-class-it's-scary, then I suggest you go to Fluff and Such Productions and worship Nonsanity_Cat and company, for they are everything SVP is not. However, if you want to see badly mimed, half-arsed attempts at puppetry done to obscure music, then take your medications and hallucinogens and proceed further down the page.

If you want to drop me a line, send it along to: southpaw @ clovertone . com. Thanx!

Here are the the videos. New ones at the top, older ones at the bottom. All of them are in (sur)RealMedia format (unless noted otherwise). To download, right-click on the links and "Save As..." or "Save Target As..."

I'm So Happy When You're Near -- Size: 1.5M  Created: 31 July 2004
NOTES: Since SO many people enjoyed my "Mrs. Miller" videos, I thought I'd go one better and introduce the Funday Pawpet Show to the wonders of "The Shaggs." For those who may not have heard The Shaggs, they are... an experience.
MUSIC: "I'm So Happy When You're Near" by The Shaggs
PUPPET: Maki-chan and Fumi

That Little Sports Car -- Size: 1.5M  Created: 31 July 2004
NOTES: One Shaggs song is never enough. So here's a second one.
MUSIC: "That Little Sports Car" by The Shaggs
PUPPET: Maki-chan and Fumi

My Love -- Size: 1.5M  Created: 31 July 2004
NOTES: Another fairly quick video. The people on the Funday Pawpet Show kept harping on and on about how abysmal the songs of Mrs. Miller are, so I made a pair of videos showcasing her songs. I like this song in particular an awful lot, but I don't really know why.
MUSIC: "My Love" by Mrs. Miller
PUPPET: Maki-chan

A Lover's Concerto -- Size: 1.6M  Created: 31 July 2004
NOTES: Another fairly quick video. The people on the Funday Pawpet Show keep harping on and on about how abysmal the songs of Mrs. Miller are, so I made a pair of videos showcasing her songs. I like the silly emotion portrayed in this song -- especially toward the end.
MUSIC: "A Lover's Concerto" by Mrs. Miller
PUPPET: Maki-chan

Money -- Size: 2.6M  Created: 26 February 2004
NOTES: Another straightforward video. Nothing special -- no visual effects or overblown acting. I'm saving it for a special video I have planned (it's over half-made now, but I have to wait for the right time to finish it). Ooo... Foreshadowing!
MUSIC: "Money" by Space
PUPPET: Patrick

Bitchin' Camaro -- Size: 2.1M  Created: 26 February 2004
NOTES: This marks the first video for 2004. Yes, yes... It's been too long since I've made one. This was a "quick and dirty" video with lots of errors. I controlled both puppets at the same time, so my attention was split between the two (you'll note that Bueller's mouth doesn't move on his first line because I was positioning Walter). Still, it was a fun song to do and I hope people will find it entertaining.
MUSIC: "Bitchin' Camaro" by The Dead Milkmen
PUPPETS: Walter Woolfe and Bueller

My Baby Loves A Bunch Of Authors -- Size: 1.7M  Created: 6 December 2003
NOTES: I've been wanting to make a video of this song for a LONG time. It's a fun piece. This is yet another experiment in split-screens. It came out a little better than my first split-screen attempt, but I can't figure out HOW I did it with the new software. I really should read the manual that came with Vegas Video. Obram, my bear puppet, makes his debut here!
MUSIC: "My Baby Loves A Bunch Of Authors" by Moxy Früvous
PUPPETS: Toshiro, Patrick and Obram

Something's Coming... -- Size: 5.3M ZIP File  Created: 25 October 2003
NOTES: Happy Hallowe'en! Yes, it's been a while since my last video. I lost my will to create for a little while and I'm trying to jump-start it back into life. This is a very short video (less than a minute long). The reason for the huge file size is that this video will NOT convert well to (sur)RealMedia format and I'm supplying the MPEG version here in a ZIP file. Filmed on a bright cheery day in late October. (NB: The first person to compare it to the "Blair Witch Project" gets a fat lip!)
MUSIC: "Something's Coming" by Bob Drake
PUPPET: Patrick

Welcome To The Jungle -- Size: 1.7M  Created: 23 August 2003
NOTES: This marks the first video in the second year of SVP's existence. This, in reality, was just a test of all the new equipment I've gotten over the past couple of months. The video looks a little dark, but now I know to adjust the brightness in future. By the way, the song isn't by that hard rock band from the 90's, it's a completely different song done by They Might Be Giants. It was only available on the CD Single of "The Guitar" (now out of print).
REVISION - 30 August 2003: Taking inspiration from a friend's comment, I have slightly altered the video to bring an effect closer to what I originally had in mind.
MUSIC: "Welcome To The Jungle" by They Might Be Giants (CD Single currently out of print)
PUPPET: Patrick

Gibberish / Mrs. Robinson -- Size: 3.4M  Created: 21 June 2003
NOTES: Direct from RadioTelevision Southpaw and announced by the dulcet tones of Lee "Slothpuck" Jones, we have a rather bizarre interview. I've wanted to do this skit by Eric Idle and Neil Innes for a while now and I finally put it together. I recorded a close up segment for both puppets and a group shot with the two of them. Then I sliced and diced to put it all together -- and tried to deal with some small continuity errors (but they're hidden well enough). (sur)Real encoding really gummed up the joke with the credits. They're supposed to speed by as quickly as possible -- just like they do on real television shows. :-P One other thing, Patrick is going to be in different clothes from now on (I finally found the right sized clothing to fit him -- he's getting a wardrobe).
Mrs. Robinson, on the other hand, is a fairly straightforward video. Nothing special about it. It debuts my ferret, Bueller (some may get the joke). On reflection, I really should have used a lighter drop for the foreground. You can barely see the ferret's legs against the so-dark-green-it's-almost-black drop used.
MUSIC: "Gibberish" by Eric Idle and Neil Innes (album currently out of print) / "Mrs. Robinson" by the Lemonheads
PUPPETS: Patrick and Lenny / Bueller

Reprehensible -- Size: 2.1M  Created: 17 May 2003
NOTES: I wanted to do two videos in one week, so I dusted off my list of "music to make a quick video" and chose this rare song from They Might Be Giants. I had this originally from their E-Music MP3 album "Long Tall Weekend", but got a clearer copy from their compilation "They Got Lost." A charming little ditty about a not-so-charming person. Lenny makes his return appearance here.
MUSIC: "Reprehensible" by They Might Be Giants
PUPPET: Lenny

Ray of Gob -- Size: 2.6M  Created: 17 May 2003
NOTES: This hard-rocking song from  Go Home Productions is a mind-twisting mix of the Sex Pistols' Pretty Vacant and God Save the Queen with Madonna's Ray of Light. I had to do it, rabid punker that I am. As a test, I changed the software that I used to capture the video. Since it doesn't tell me if I dropped any frames, I don't know if it works any better. All I know is that it captures LARGER frames. This can be either a good or bad thing. Time will tell. I have Vegas Video 4.0 on order, so maybe the new version will be better.
MUSIC: "Ray of Gob" by Go Home Productions
PUPPET: Maki-chan

Drunk Again -- Size: 2.8M  Created: 25 March 2003
NOTES: This song by Reel Big Fish wasn't my first choice for a video, but it's done, so there you are. I normally don't like doing depressing songs for my videos, but this bittersweet lament felt right. I had a devil of a time trying to keep Patrick's hands at the keyboard, and in the process, failed to notice his right hand was perpendicular to the keys during filming. Oh well. There's a very subtle effect throughout this video. Whether or not it'll be noticeable during the show is anybody's guess.
MUSIC: "Drunk Again" by Reel Big Fish
PUPPET: Patrick

Stealing People's Mail -- Size: 1.2M  Created: 5 March 2003
NOTES: A video done on the first take. I wanted to keep the punk ethic on this and the "Nobody" (q.v.) video since they were both punk rock songs: a minute or so of practice and then done on the first take -- who cares what it looks like. This one came out much better than "Nobody", so there you have it. Some people had also mentioned that I haven't done much in the way of punk songs in videos. This should shut them up. By the way, this was the first video done using my new Dazzle video device ("Nobody" being the second). I like how it makes my video brighter than the old TV card I was using, but I've got to make some adjustments -- as I seem to be dropping a frame of video every second during capture. That, and the RealPlayer encoding really doesn't like a fast moving video. It's jerky as all get-out. Someday, I'll have the room to put the MPEG version of my videos here. :-/
MUSIC: "Stealing People's Mail" by Dead Kennedys
PUPPET: Patrick

Nobody -- Size: 1.5M  Created: 5 March 2003
NOTES: Another video done on the first take (and it shows). I've wanted to do this cover by Chixdiggit for a while now. I'll probably re-do it at a later date and make it more "professional". This also marks the debut of Terrence the coyote. His name was originally going to be "T.J.", but I found out after the video was made that there was someone in the Pawpet Show's channel who went by the handle "TJ Coyote" (and I wondered why the name sounded right/familiar). The explanation here of the name change is to avoid confusion, but he's still credited as T.J. in this video.
MUSIC: "Nobody" (undocumented bonus track) by Chixdiggit!
PUPPETS: Terrence (T.J.) and Patrick

Eaten by the Monster of Love -- Size: 2.4M  Created: 8 February 2003
NOTES: My first video for 2003! Also, my first attempt at a tri-split screen. I think it turned out rather well. Yes, I know you can see the divisions, all I have to do now is learn to puppet in a straight line. I wanted this done in time for the Valentine's edition of the Funday Pawpet Show. As it turned out, there were so many videos submitted that mine was squeezed out. It'll be shown, just not on the Valentine's show.
The opening scene was done as a little humor for the show.
MUSIC: "Narcissus" by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and "Eaten by the Monster of Love" by Sparks
PUPPETS: Lenny, Patrick, Toshiro and Warren

One Tin Soldier -- Size: 1.4M  Created: 13 December 2002
NOTES: My first video created with Vegas Video 3.0 from start to finish. Vegas Video is SO much more easy to use than Premiere. This is a fairly simple video. No breath-taking leaps here, except for the fact that I FINALLY have my lighting issues solved. Hurrah! I also have to make some adjustments to Lenny's muzzle -- there's far too much play inside there for my hand to comfortably mime singing. This song burned my arm out with Lenny, but when I tried the same song with Patrick, it was hurting nowhere near as much. Time to experiment...
MUSIC: "One Tin Soldier" by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
PUPPET: Lenny

Under The Table With Her -- Size: 1.6M  Created: 30 November 2002
NOTES: I normally use Sonic Foundry's "VideoFactory 2.0" to produce my videos, but I had an opportunity to use Adobe Premiere 6.0 (as a test) to see if it would be better for me. After this video, I couldn't uninstall it fast enough! Completely futile. I guess the biggest issue with Premiere is that I don't use Digital Video (I'm all VHS Analogue, baby!), and DV is Premiere's strong suit. I used Premiere for only ONE effect (a momentary split-screen) and it's rather glaring when it happens. Nope. Adobe will not have to worry about either Piracy or a Sale from me. I have a (fully legit and paid-for) copy of Vegas Video (VideoFactory's BIG brother) coming to me in the mail. I think I'll get more mileage out of that programme rather than Premiere. Oh... the video has the debut of Barley (the scruffy dog) and Lenny (finally got the full-sized lion puppet). 25 bonus points if you know where the opening tag music is from.
REVISION - 13 December 2002: Using Vegas Video, I made the video a little lighter and made the split screen much less glaring.
MUSIC: "Under the Table with Her" by Sparks
PUPPETS: Barley and Lenny

Mr. Bad Example -- Size: 2.2M  Created: 30 November 2002
NOTES: Pretty much straightforward. This took me three tries (on two separate days) to get it done right. Because of the continuous stream of lyrics over the course of the entire song, this was MURDER to mime. My left arm is still sore. Ouch! Oddly enough, the Funday Pawpet Show credited the song to the Warren Zevon album "Learning to Flinch" (a live album) instead of the title track to "Mr. Bad Example" (a studio album that is presently out of print) where I originally got the song. So much for accuracy. 10 bonus points if you know where the opening tag music is from.
MUSIC: "Mr. Bad Example" by Warren Zevon
PUPPET: Patrick (aka PunkTiger)

Baby Portable Rock -- Size: 2.7M  Created: 1 October 2002
NOTES: This will probably be my last J-pop/Pizzicato Five song for a while. There were a number of issues I had while filming this video. From lighting (forgetting to turn them on, or having them go out mid-take -- I gave up trying to properly light the window scene) to props (it took me a while to locate my old record player, and I created the label shown on the record), I put a lot of work into this video, but I still feel like I did a half-arsed job. Warren Woolf (not to be confused with his twin brother Walter) debuts at the end of the video.
Bonus points if you know where the opening music for the production tag came from.
MUSIC: "Baby Portable Rock" by Pizzicato Five
PUPPETS: Maki-chan and Warren Woolf

Wasting My Life -- Size: 1.9M  Created: 13 September 2002
NOTES: Decided to make use of Mini-Lenny and Mini-Punk at the beginning. The opening snippet of music is "She Broke My Dick" by All. A delightful little ditty, but would most likely break the FPS rating if played in its entirety. That being said, the writing on Punk's... erm... organ is the word "Melodiya" in Russian Cyrillic characters. Southpaw Trivia: That's the make of Punk's balalaika and amplifier. I think it's the Russian word for "music", but I'm not sure.
MUSIC: "Wasting My Life" by The Hippos
PUPPETS: Mini-Lenny, Mini-Punk, Patrick

I -- Size: 1.3M  Created: 13 September 2002
NOTES: Maki-chan's debut video. I wanted to have her wear a bit more jewelry, but couldn't find anything to please her... or at least that would show up well on camera. Ah well... The MPEG version of this video (sent to the FPS), for some odd reason, made the translation captions fade from one to the other. It's a cool effect, but it doesn't happen on the (sur)RealMedia files available here. Something to consider for the next time I have need of captions in a video.
MUSIC: "I" by Pizzicato Five
PUPPET: Maki-chan (No relation to Toshiro -- q.v.)

It's Not My Birthday -- Size:1.4M  Created: 22 August 2002
NOTES: In the viewfinder on my video camera, my monitor and during editing, the lighting for this video seemed to be good enough. When it played on the FPS, it came out far too dark. This will teach me to get more lighting for my videos. "Good Enough" isn't. Also, my hand was cramping up big-time as the video went on, as apparent by the copious "bouncing". By the way, the FPS has a number of the same fox puppets I used to make this video. They are known there as the Voop vixens. Toshiro is male, thus the odd disclaimer at the end of the video of him not being a "Voop".
MUSIC: "It's Not My Birthday" by They Might Be Giants
PUPPET: Toshiro Kitsune

When It Rains, It Snows -- Size: 1.3M  Created: 22 August 2002
NOTES: I abandoned the idea of creating a bunch of 30-second songs for the Funday Pawpet Show (FPS), mainly because it would be nigh impossible to schedule them because of their short duration and the format of the FPS itself (see note to "The Count" below). This is my first "regular" sized video. The song itself has a long pause within it, but I lengthened it for comedic value.
MUSIC: "When It Rains It Snows" by They Might Be Giants
PUPPET: Patrick (aka PunkTiger)

The Count -- Size: 553K  Created: 16 July 2002
NOTES: I was thrilled that VideoFactory handled transparent GIFs. This also shows my first crack at creating an animated GIF as well. It was a pain getting the animation to follow in time with the song, but I think I did a passable job. I also changed the production name on this one to "A PunkTiger 'Popcorn Video'" in anticipation of making more short music videos. Unfortunately, this video never was shown on the Funday Pawpet Show.
MUSIC: "The Count" by Wizo
PUPPET: Patrick (aka PunkTiger)

Short Attention Span -- Size: 313K  Created: 2 July 2002
NOTES: My first video. 8 seconds. Self explanatory. Cameo of my favourite anime Wild Knights Gulkeeva. If you look closely, you can see the string.
MUSIC: "Short Attention Span" by the Fizzy Bangers
PUPPET: Patrick (aka PunkTiger)

I plan on making more, so I'm not through with you just yet. ;-)
